Factors to Consider When Choosing a Cheap Tequila

1. Quality of ingredients - When searching the market for a cheap, good tequila, opt for tequilas labeled with 100% agave and avoid “mixtos” - these are, as the name suggests, mixed, made up of at least 50% tequila and the rest is just sugars and other sweeteners which greatly affects the flavor and quality.
2. Type of Tequila - “Blanco” or silver tequilas are typically the most affordable of all the available varieties of tequila as these don’t go through tedious aging processes which significantly cuts down on production costs. Since these are bottled immediately after distillation, they retain the natural sweetness of the agave in its true, unadulterated form making it an ideal base for cocktails. Reposados are also a more affordable option. Although they do require aging, there are brands that reuse barrels to cut back on production costs which in turn lowers their market price.
3. Brand Reputation - Research brands known for producing cheap, good tequila that prioritize quality despite lower price points. Some of the more established brands are also known to offer premium quality tequilas at a lower price point.
4. Flavor Profile - One thing one must not compromise on, regardless of the price point, is the flavor profile. It is still imperative that the tequila retains its classic traits - sweetness from the agave accentuated with citrus and peppery notes.
5. Smoothness - Even the cheaper tequilas should still be smooth enough to be enjoyed in a margarita or even taken neat or on the rocks without overpowering bitterness.
6. Reviews and Awards - Affordability never stood in the way of a good product gaining industry recognition so look for brands that have positive consumer reviews and/or industry awards - the ultimate seal of approval.
